Those first 48 hours of our southwest American road trip were a lesson in foreground focus. On the wary lookout for diamondback rattlesnakes, scorpions and tarantulas, Arizona’s dramatic scenery was, initially, of secondary importance to the soil beneath my flip flops. But here – carrying a picnic down to Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona – I am finally able to concentrate on my travel companions, and the incredible background we will spend three weeks exploring.
