Swift and deadly, the diamondback rattlesnake is a masterpiece of natural evolution. Only the rhythm of its tail, banded by black and white stripes, distinguishes it from harmless relatives. An even more masterful development of natural behavior? That I didn’t soil my pants in the backward crash to escape its angry rattle. (Catalina State Park, Arizona, USA).
